Banned and Censored: How the Internet Shapes Abortion Access
Today, access to safe abortion depends on open and free internet. As more people rely on the internet for SRH information and services, digital spaces are becoming more closed, controlled, and fragmented. Big Tech shapes access to abortion as decisively as national laws and policies. Conservative governments and anti-rights groups recognize that abortion bans do not stop abortion, so they target freedom of speech and censor websites instead.
The fight for bodily autonomy has moved online and is now deeply embedded in the fight for internet freedom. The talk prompts listeners to consider the emerging digital threats facing abortion seekers and providers - how we must not allow AI systems, content moderation, disinformation and state censorship to shape or interfere with people’s self-care journeys.
